Program Overview
Distracted, impaired, and reckless driving remain leading causes of preventable injuries and fatalities across the U.S. Although public awareness campaigns and evolving laws have helped address some roadway risks, young drivers continue to face disproportionately great dangers behind the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, tens of thousands of people die each year in motor vehicle crashes, many linked to preventable behaviors such as distraction, impairment, and excessive speed.
Understanding the behavioral, social, and legal factors that contribute to unsafe driving is essential to creating safer communities. To encourage thoughtful discussion about these issues, Sweet James is proud to offer the Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship, a $2,500 academic scholarship awarded to a student pursuing higher education at an accredited college, university, trade school, or graduate program in the United States.
Applicants must submit a 750 to 1,000-word essay analyzing unsafe driving behaviors and proposing research-backed strategies that could reduce crashes and injuries. Students from all fields of study are welcome to apply.
However, the scholarship may be especially relevant for those interested in public policy, public health, behavioral psychology, transportation safety, or law. The application deadline is October 15, 2026, and the selected recipient will be announced after the review process concludes.

Application Requirements / Who Is Eligible?
The Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students who meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in or accepted at an accredited college, university, trade school, or graduate program in the United States.
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and provide an unofficial transcript.
- Be a U.S. citizen or otherwise authorized to attend school or work in the United States.
- Submit an original essay responding to the scholarship topic below.
- Complete the scholarship application form on this page.
- Agree to the scholarship Terms and Conditions.
Students from any academic discipline may apply if they meet the eligibility requirements and submit the required materials.

Scholarship Essay Topic
Applicants must submit an essay between 750 and 1,000 words addressing the following topic:
Distracted, impaired, and reckless driving continue to contribute to serious injuries and fatalities across the United States. Despite growing public awareness and legislative efforts, young drivers remain especially vulnerable to these risks.
In your essay, analyze the social, psychological, and legal factors that contribute to unsafe driving behaviors. Using academic research, traffic safety studies, behavioral science insights, and public policy analysis, explain why these behaviors occur and how targeted prevention strategies could reduce roadway injuries and fatalities.
Your essay may explore topics such as:
- Psychological factors behind distracted or impaired driving, including risk perception or decision-making.
- The effectiveness of traffic safety laws or initiatives, such as graduated licensing programs or hands-free legislation.
- The role of peer influence and social norms in shaping teen driving behavior.
- Innovative policy, technology, or education-based strategies that could reduce crashes.
- Data-driven analysis of traffic safety trends and injury prevention.
Students are encouraged to support their arguments with credible research and thoughtful analysis.
Essay Submission Requirements
For an essay to be considered eligible, submissions must include the following:
- A clear and original title.
- Proper citations throughout the essay.
- A bibliography listing all sources used, such as books, articles, reports, or websites.
Once finished, please save your essay in PDF format and name the file using the following format:
“Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship 2026 – [Student Name]”
Scholarship Deadline
The deadline to apply for the Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship is October 15, 2026. Applications received after this date will not be considered.
After the deadline, all submissions will be reviewed by the scholarship selection committee. Depending on the number of applications received, the decision process may take between one and three months.
Due to the high volume of applications, Sweet James cannot respond to inquiries regarding application status. Applicants will be contacted directly if additional information is needed during the review process.
Terms and Conditions
All applicants must meet the eligibility requirements outlined on this scholarship page, including the following:
- Applicant must be enrolled in a college, university, trade school, or graduate school.
- Applicant must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.
- Applicant must reside in the United States.
- Applicant must be in good academic standing.
- Applicant must submit personal and academic information through the application form.
- Applicant must submit an original essay responding to the scholarship topic.
- Applicant must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and provide an unofficial transcript.
The following individuals are not eligible to apply:
- Employees or children of employees of Sweet James.
- Past recipients of the Safe Roads, Bright Futures Scholarship.
- Applicants unwilling or unable to participate in an interview with a representative of Sweet James if selected as the scholarship recipient.
- Applicants who submit the same essay for multiple scholarships or reuse an essay from previous years.
Selection and Award Notification Process
All applications must be received before the deadline listed on this page. Incomplete applications or submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
A scholarship selection committee will review all eligible submissions and evaluate the quality of the essay, the strength of the research, and the originality of ideas. Age, race, religion, gender, national origin, familial status, or other protected characteristics will not influence the committee’s decision.
The scholarship recipient will be notified via email. An announcement will also be made on the Sweet James blog and through a press release.
The $2,500 scholarship award will be sent directly to the recipient’s college, trade school, or university. The firm may request documentation confirming enrollment and academic standing before funds are distributed.
